Create your Digital Twin with Gemini Notebook, Personal Intelligence, and Gems

In Episode 219 of OnEBoard Chat, Bob Danley explains how to customize the Gemini App, Notebook and Gems to create a writing assistant and knowledge base that uses your personal style and workflows.

Bob explained how to create your "Digital Twin" by customizing Google Gemini to reflect your personal expertise, voice and workflows. That's combined with a knowledge base of specific documents assembled in Gemini Notebook and a personalized Gemini Gem as your writing assistant that understands your style.

"So the main idea is that you want AI to reflect your unique expertise. And the way to do that is to personalize Gemini. So it's not just a basic chatbot, but into a real digital twin. [...] You want the customized setup to seamlessly extend your professional background, your creative workflow, and your unique perspective. And, also, by doing so, that means you won't have to reexplain it every time."
  • Configure Personal Intelligence in the Gemini App, including Memory settings and Connected Apps.
  • Set global instructions for Gemini, including your background and expertise, your audience and goals, and your preferred style and formatting.
  • Understand the Gemini ecosystem, with the Gemini App as the "Versatile Generalist", Gemini Gems as your "Personality Twin" and Gemini Notebook as your "Knowledge Twin".

Bob notes that you can and should modify Gemini's instructions, "this is not meant to be permanent. You can turn this on or off and tweak it over time as you become more experienced or knowledgeable about what you want to do. "

Bob explains that you need to organize your Notebooks, "When you create Notebooks, you want to keep the subject matter kind of focused on one specific thing and not overlap it with several other things, because, again, the information that will be synthesized or outlined by Notebook will be more accurate because you're not introducing things that would take it into the ditch so to speak. Okay. So entomology notes would be about insects. Mycology would be about fungi and then creative outlines would be that very thing. You know, what do you want to do?"

Also create specialized Gems, "And of course, you will need a different Gem for different roles. So, if you wanted to have a personal coding coach or creative writing partner or fitness planner, you would create a Gem, a different Gem for each of those. Okay. And they're reusable."

Bob says we can prevent AI slop, "And I can tell you folks that if we want to, we can do something about that. Okay. On an individual basis, we can prevent that from happening by taking action on our own production. [...] The only way that this thing is going to change is if we all try to make it better. And it seems very likely that this AI thing isn't going to go away."

Bob concludes, "as my final call to action, I'm asking you, hey, take some time today and and get things organized so you can create and deploy your personalized AI twin today. Let's follow this checklist. Go to Gemini, find that left hand column, open up Personal Intelligence, toggle on the things that you think will basically help the AI become your digital twin or AI assistant. Review all those features. Remember that you can turn them on and turn them off whenever you want to create Gemini Notebooks. Try creating some some initial projects to see how they come out, to see if your directions are doing a pretty good job of giving you content that you really want."
