Tech Topic 74: Vertical Google Vids videos, NotebookLM updates, YouTube Courses

This week's Tech Topic has tips for creating vertical video with Google Vids, the latest NotebookLM features, and setting up a YouTube Course.

This week's backgrounds were generated in Meet with inspiration from the Book of Kells. Peggy gave hers a robot twist.

Nina Trankova: Use Google Vids to create vertical videos

Nina demonstrated the new Google Vids format option that lets you create vertical and square videos. You can either create a new video with the selected format, or convert an existing landscape video project to vertical format.

She notes that the success of converting a video from landscape to vertical depends on the quality of the original material and it likely requires some editing for the final video.

Peggy Kolm: Create a YouTube Course

Create a Course in YouTube Studio on desktop

Peggy gave an overview of how to create a YouTube Course in YouTube Studio on desktop. This option was just made available to channels with advanced features enabled.

She explained how a Course is a specialized playlist with comments. Viewers see their progress, and when they have completed the course they get a special badge.

She says "I think this is a way to maybe encourage people to watch a whole series of videos. There's no way to monetize the courses other than through ads right now. You can't make a paid course, although YouTube is experimenting with that. But I think that this has potential for encouraging people, you know, to watch a whole series of your videos on a particular topic."
