OnEBoard Chat: Coding Web Apps with Gemini Canvas

This week Nina Trankova demonstrated how to use Gemini Pro 2.5 Canvas to generate code for a web app. The OnEBoard team discussed implementation, technical limitations, and the potential for professionals and education.

Nina used "Master Your Visuals" generated by Gemini from OnEBoard Tech Topic episodes as the basis of the app. The app was designed to "turn informative content into an interactive learning experience, keeping users engaged and up-to-date."

This week's background was generated in Meet with the prompt "web app code".

Topics

Nina demonstrates how the web app was created using Gemini Canvas.

Topics covered in this week's Chat:
  • The potential of using Gemini Canvas for non-coders, professionals and educators
  • Vibe coding
  • Challenges with implementing and integrating the app
  • Why developers are still essential, but their role is changing
  • The future of possible AI tools integrated with content management systems.
  • Challenges with updating dynamic content
  • AI as an educational tool

Takeaways

Peggy shows the web app implemented on a Blogger Page.
It unfortunately didn't look so great in wider windows (see the video for a demonstration).

Nina Trankova: "It's really a revolution specifically to people who don't code."

Nina Trankova: "we don't see developers going anywhere. So they are here to stay ... but their work is going to change as is changing everything every industry."

Peggy Kolm on limitations: "you may not actually understand the code enough to fix it when it's not working quite as you expect."

Peggy Kolm: "And I think that's kind of exciting to think that you can more easily make your blog or website look the way you want it to look without having to know the details or hire someone to create a template, but it will still keep the context."

Bob Danley: " I think part of what is lacking right now with AI is how do you use this? You know, for WordPress, if I wanted to embed that into my WordPress, I don't think it would work very well because the web app that is created is a standalone page. It has its own header and footer. So, imagine trying to put that already in a standing web page. It would look kind of funny and maybe wouldn't be functional."

Bob Danley: " Or you know, think about this. Maybe you don't need to make a web app. Maybe you just need to make a video or maybe you just need to make a PDF using AI. So, you know, don't think that you're trapped into just creating a web app because this AI can do all sorts of different products."

Bob Danley: "...you need to get on the bandwagon or get on the train. Don't get left behind because this thing is not going away. In fact, it's accelerating."
