Tech Topic 58: Photoshop iPhone app, Lightroom Smart Previews, Quick Share for Windows

This week the OnEBoard crew shared three tech tips for editing photos and sharing files between Windows computers and Android devices.

Nina was not able to join the live podcast this week, but Bob and Peggy made sure there were still three tips in 10 minutes.

Bob Danley: Install the new free Photoshop app on your iPhone

Adobe just released Photoshop for iPhone totally free.

Bob says: "it's pretty robust because it includes many Photoshop editing tools like combining, compositing, blending images with selections, layers, and mass spot healing brush, and of course, access to Adobe Stock images."

Bob Danley: Use Lightroom Smart Previews

If you use Adobe Lightroom Classic, be sure to select the option to Eable Smart Previews when you import RAW format image files. That setting is under File Handling.

When you select that option it creates a much smaller DNG format preview files. You can edit those files disconnected from your catalog and they will sync back the changes to the original file when connected again. This also saves your external hard drives from wear and tear.

Peggy Kolm: Install Quick Share for Windows for easy sharing with Android devices

Quick share is a feature on Android phones, tablets and Chromebooks that allows direct sharing of photos, videos and other files with nearby devices.

Google also offers a Quick Share app for Windows that lets you easily and rapidly share files between your PC and nearby Android devices.

You can install Quick Share on your PC from the Android.com site. Start here.

Note that there is a Quick Share app in the Microsoft Store from Samsung, not Google, and it may not work the same way.

If you sign in to your Google Account, you can choose to limit file transfers to just devices signed into your account or your Contacts.

Peggy says "It is so much easier than trying to connect things with a cable or upload and download or send an email or anything like that. It's just immediate transfer."

Requirements:

  • Bluetooth enabled on all devices.
  • 64-bit Windows 10 or higher (Windows 11 required for ARM devices)
  • Sharing with Android device with Android 6 or higher, or Chromebook
