Tech Topic 53: Digital decluttering, image-based quizzes, account security

This week the OnEBoard crew has tips for digital decluttering, creating engaging quizzes and securing your accounts. Plus test your knowledge about Google Gemini!

Nina Trankova: Clear up space on your devices and cloud storage

Nina suggests taking time to clear storage space on your phone and in your cloud storage accounts.

That includes backing up your photos, then removing the photo files from your device.

She also recommends organizing your files in your cloud storage and deleting duplicates and those you do not need any more. You can use the new option in Google Photos to undo backups to remove images from your Google cloud storage, as long as you have another backup of your photos.

Finally, remove any inactive profiles and wipe any old devices you are no longer using.

Peggy Kolm: Create Image Quizzes on YouTube

Peggy suggests trying the new option to create YouTube multiple choice quiz posts with images. This opens up some fun possibilities and may make your quizzes more engaging. Peggy will have an image-based quiz on her channel's Community Tab later this week.

Currently you can only create quizzes with images in the Android YouTube app.

Bob Danley: Secure your Gmail and Google Account

Bob shared his tip via email today.  He was inspired to dig into account security after learning how Mark Cuban had his Google account hacked.

Here's what you can do:

  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA).
  • Use passkeys.
  • Set up a recovery phone number and email address.
  • Use a strong, unique password for your Gmail account.
  • Be wary of phishing emails.
  • Be careful about what information you share online.
  • Use different email addresses for different purposes.
  • Consider using a service like Hide My Email, which masks your true email address with a unique, randomly generated address.
  • Update your operating system and browser regularly.
  • Run antivirus and anti-malware software on your devices.
  • Sign up for a dark-web-monitoring service.
  • Monitor your bank and credit card statements for any unauthorized transactions.
  • If you think your account has been hacked, take action immediately.
