Tech Topic 80: Google AI Plus Family Plans, PDF Translation, Google "Learn Your Way"

In this week's episode of OnEBoard Tech Topic Peggy, Nina and Bob have tips for getting Google's cheapest AI plan, translating PDFs, and customized learning.

This week's background is Winter Olympics parallel snowboarding.

Peggy Kolm: Google AI Plus Family Plan

Peggy shared details about the Google AI Plus plan that just became available globally. What you need to know:

  • The AI Plus plan gives access to additional AI features and has higher limits for generative AI use, but is cheaper than the AI Pro and AI Ultra plans. It also includes 200 GB storage for Gmail, Photos, and Drive.
  • Google One AI Premium (2 TB+ plans) include the AI Plus features. They also include Google Workspace premium features in many countries.
  • Both AI Plus plans and Google One AI Premium plans can be shared with up to five Google Family Group members.
If you already have or are in Family Group with a Google One Premium subscription, take time to try the new AI Plus features at no additional cost!

Nina Trankova: Translate PDFs with Google Translate

Nina explains how to translate a PDF file by uploading it to Google Translate. That creates a new, translated PDF file that you can download. The file has a "Machine translated by Google" notice.

Nina says, "So it's not for official documentation but if you need just for work references it's a very fast and time-saving way to work with translation and documentation."

  • Google Translate Support: Translate Documents. It notes that files up to 10 MB can be translated, and PDF files must not be more than 300 pages.

Bob shared a slide deck he created with NotebookLM that explains Google's research on AI personalized textbooks. There is a demo on Google's "Learn Your Way" site, which "demonstrates what's possible when [they] combine Google's cutting edge AI research with effective learning science. Developed in collaboration with pedagogy experts, it's backed by research to drive quality and efficacy for every learner."

Bob says, "Learn Your Way is targeting kids from grade 1 to grade 12. And they're using this basically as their guide to help kids or individualize learning for each child because textbooks are somewhat static."
